Although Maimonides does not always distinguish between the Hebrew termsaveirah and avon, the latter is generally reserved for a more severe category of wrongdoing(Introduction to the Mishneh Torah, s.v.u-devarim halalu). He usesavon to categorize shaming a person in public (Laws of Beliefs 6:8), tale-bearing(termeda greatavon; ibid 7:1), slander(ibid 7:2), and so on.
