During the last quarter of the 19th century, entensive sewage farms were established in and around Berlin . After the construction of modern sewage plants, however, most of these farms were discontinued, especially since the 1960s. From early on the sewage farms attracted the interest of birdwatchers, with first breeding birds(M. Garling) and later passage birds becoming the focus of attention. The observations showed the sewage farm belt to be a very important resting site for migrating waders and Water Pipits. It was also established that the area holds regional importance for its large numbers of rare and threatened breeding birds, and for the high concentrations of resting ducks and common passerines. Since siutable stop-over sites for waders have become especially scarce during the last decades, the few remaining sites have to be protected and restored to their former condition. This is in no way acting against the necessity of soil and ground water protection.
