Europeana Collections 1914-1918
Europeana Project of the Centre for Military History and Social Sciences of the Bundeswehr (ZMSBw)
The library of the Centre for Military History and Social Sciences of the Bundeswehr (ZMSBw) has digitized 26 pieces which it presents on the platform „Europeana Collections 1914-1918“.
This small selection documents everyday warfare on the western and eastern fronts of the First World War, shows battles and the effects of various kinds of warfare (army, navy, air force) as well as the camp life of German soldiers captured in war in Australia and Japan. The forms of expression include autobiographical notes such as diaries and photos, but also artistic processing of the perception of war. The original documents from the prisoner-of-war camp Bando (Japan) and its surroundings are particularly valuable. The 14 watercolours and stone drawings by the painter Oscar Achenbach also stand out from the masses of contemporary media.
The digitization of the collection was carried out in cooperation with Potsdam University Library and the Centre for Military History and Social Sciences of the Bundeswehr (ZMSBw).
